Coconut shell charcoal is UN 1361, Class 4.2, Packing Group III, and we declare and ship it that way. Since IMDG Amendment 42-24 became mandatory on 1 January 2026, Special Provision 978 governs it — a passed UN N.4 self-heating test no longer takes charcoal out of the Code, so the exemption route that existed before it is closed. We hold the material for its weathering period and check its temperature on the day of packing, which is what SP 978 actually asks of a shipper.
